Come in for a splash of color in ‘A Shine of Rainbows.’

Come to the isle of Cory where you can experience the beautiful vistas as only Ireland can give you and witness  ‘A Shine of Rainbows’.  It’s hard to have an ugly movie made in a country where so much beauty covers the land like a blanket.  Its magical realism at its best based on the novel by Lillian Beckwith.

According to my wife this picture was great because ..

1.       It has a kid in it. ( This usually determines the greatness of a picture for her)
2.       It takes place in Ireland. (She is a 110% Irish in heart and mind if not by nationality.)
3.       It made her laugh and or cry.

It’s 1963 and Tomas has moved from the orphanage in the city to the coastal farm by the sea.  He has been taken to the home of Marie and Alec, hopefully to stay as their son. Marie is warm, loving, and full of color and smiles.  Alec is sort of cold, gruff, and full of blandness and frowns.

Tomas has been severally picked on at the orphanage and is really nervous in his new surroundings. Tomas slowly starts to come out of his shy turtle shell with the loving presence of the person he now calls mum.  The warm up to Himself (Alec) takes a lot longer.  The females in this picture tend to treat Tomas with kindness and affection while the males tend to bully him around.

Amongst his many experiences on the island include… (some true, some  not)

·         Learning to Jump in Puddles in his bright new Yellow Rain Boots.
·         Befriending two local island children named Seamus and Nancy, one whom he rescues from a mad seagull.
·         Witnessing A brawl carry on throughout the village.
·         Learn how to talk ‘Chicken’ and ‘Seal’.
·         Having  beautiful Irish music in the background though out the picture.
·         Witnessing the Ancient Stones holding the frozen King Fingel right below the ruins of his castle.
·         Venturing into ‘The Bat Cave’.
·         Taking a stranded baby seal named Smudge under his protective care.  His goal becomes to get this seal back to the care of his Mum.
·         Watching a Seal turn into a woman.
·         Something I can’t say as it would spoil the film for those who haven’t seen it.
·         An encounter with Leprechaun’s and a Banshee.

To learn the answers to these questions and the ones below, you should put a little color into your DVD Family library and add ‘A Shine of Rainbows’.

Will Alec warm up Tomas?
Will Marie and Alec sign the papers and adopt Tomas?
Will Smudge find his Mum?
Will Tomas find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?

This film highlights the beauty of adoption which my wife and I hope to be able to do someday. To be able to give a child who needs love, love is the desire of our hearts. We also hope to travel to Ireland. Until then, this film provides us with the joy of watching a child get his wish of gaining parents and the joy of visiting the home land with laughs and cries. Come in for a splash of color in ‘A Shine of Rainbows.’
